Tally to ERPNext Migration Guide (2026): Step-by-Step for Indian Businesses

Thousands of Indian businesses migrate from Tally to ERPNext every year. This guide covers everything: data export, master mapping, opening balance transfer, and the common traps that delay go-live by months.

Why Indian Businesses Are Moving from Tally to ERPNext

Tally is India's most trusted accounting software - and for good reason. But as businesses grow, Tally's limitations become bottlenecks. Inventory across multiple warehouses, production orders, HR payroll, CRM, and real-time GST e-invoicing - Tally handles one piece of this. ERPNext handles all of it.

The 7-Step Tally to ERPNext Migration Process

1

Audit Your Tally Data

Before exporting anything, audit Tally for data quality. Common issues include duplicate ledgers, unreconciled bank statements, negative stock entries, and pending journal entries. Clean data now saves weeks of pain later.

2

Export Master Data from Tally

Export the following via Tally's built-in export or ODBC connector: Chart of Accounts (Ledgers), Supplier & Customer masters, Stock Items with HSN codes, Opening Balances (as of migration date), and pending payables/receivables.

3

Map Chart of Accounts to ERPNext Structure

This is the most critical - and most commonly rushed - step. Tally's group-based CoA must be mapped to ERPNext's balance-sheet structure. Assign correct account types (Asset, Liability, Income, Expense) and link GST tax accounts to ERPNext's tax templates.

4

Import Masters into ERPNext

Use ERPNext's Data Import Tool to upload suppliers, customers, items, and warehouses. Always import in dependency order: accounts → parties → items → warehouses. Validate each import log for errors before proceeding.

5

Post Opening Balances

Post all opening balances as of the go-live date using ERPNext's Opening Entry. This includes bank balances, stock valuation, receivables, payables, and fixed asset values. Run a Trial Balance comparison against Tally to verify accuracy before proceeding.

6

Configure GST, TDS & Compliance Settings

Set up your GSTIN, HSN codes, tax templates, and TDS sections (194C, 194J, etc.) using the India Compliance app. Configure e-invoicing credentials if your turnover exceeds the applicable threshold. Test with a sample sales invoice before go-live.

7

Parallel Run & Go-Live

Run both systems in parallel for 2–4 weeks. Post all transactions in ERPNext and verify key reports (P&L, Balance Sheet, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B) match Tally. Once reconciled, cut over fully and decommission Tally access for day-to-day operations.

Common Migration Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Migrating dirty data: Duplicate customers, wrong HSN codes, and unreconciled entries follow you into ERPNext. Clean first.
  • ❌ Skipping the parallel run: Going live without verification leads to balance sheet mismatches on Day 1.
  • ❌ Wrong account types: Mapping bank accounts as "Current Liability" or income accounts as "Assets" causes cascading errors in financial reports.
  • ❌ No user training before go-live: ERPNext's workflow is fundamentally different from Tally. Train your team at least 2 weeks in advance.
  • ❌ Migrating years of transactions instead of opening balances: It's rarely worth migrating 5 years of historical vouchers. Opening balances plus current year is the right approach for most SMEs.

Migration Timeline & Budget

Business Type Timeline Migration Budget
Trader / Distributor (simple CoA)3–5 weeks₹30,000–₹80,000
SME Manufacturer (multi-warehouse + BOM)6–10 weeks₹75,000–₹1,50,000
Multi-Company / Multi-Branch10–16 weeks₹1,50,000–₹3,00,000

* Migration budget is separate from ERPNext implementation cost. It covers data extraction, cleaning, mapping, and validation services.

"The opening balance reconciliation step alone accounts for 40% of migration effort. Businesses that rush this step spend months cleaning up discrepancies after go-live." - Jeel Patel, COO, Exalix Tech
